ON BROADWAY is about how laughter helps us deal with loss. It's about the ties of family and the warmth of Boston's neighborhoods. It's about a young man with vision, and the guts to go for it. It's about a father and son, and breaking down the wall that divides them. During the wake of Jack's godfather he hears the dead man's voice telling him to write a play. When nobody else will produce the play, Jack quits his job to produce it himself. With no money and just his gut to guide him, Jack mounts the play on the only stage he can afford: in the back room of a local pub...on a neighborhood street called Broadway. In this humble setting, Jack brings to life the play he sees in his heart - and brings together his family and friends.

Arctic Tale is an epic adventure that explores the beautiful icebound world of the Great North.

Narrated by Queen Latifah the film is from the producers that brought you “March of the Penguins,” Arctic Tale is the perfect film to open the Napa Sonoma Wine Country Film Festival which has a passion for all things related to Jack London, who spent some serious time in the frozen North.

Arctic Tale tells the story of the walrus “Seela” and the polar bear “Nanu,” as they journey from birth to adolescence to maturity and parenthood in the frozen Arctic wilderness. As the planet warms, the Arctic is changing, disrupting the ancient rhythms of life that the walrus and polar bears rely on to survive.

Once a perpetual winter wonderland of snow and ice, the walrus and the polar bear are losing their beautiful icebound world as it melts from underneath them.

This multi winning film is a fast paced, well written blend of drama, thrills and action. A "Very Bad Things" south of the border, it is a reminder of the cost of redemption and the price of friendship.

The story immediately grabs you from the very beginning with the intense scene of someone being buried alive. You don't know who it is or how they got there, but you are definitely intrigued from the start. With the use of flashbacks the director does a great job developing characters and relationships between the five friends. The flash forwards throughout the movie keeps the intense feeling that something bad is coming.

Another in the semi-autobiographical films by UK indie director Shane Meadows, THIS IS ENGLAND stands at the pinnacle of his acclaimed “midlands” working class films – TWENTYFOUR SEVEN, A ROOM FOR ROMEO BRASS, DEAD MAN’S SHOES and ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MIDLANDS.

It’s 1983, England: Thatcher, Goths, Punks, Skinheads and MetalHeads roam the scene and Shaun has turned 12. Smaller than some his age, he is easy prey for the bullies at school. He takes refuge in a gang of neighborhood older kids. His dad was killed in the Falklands War and for young Shaun the gang becomes his second family. He joins in on their parties, is introduced to girls and snappy dressing, and finds some role models among the boys of the gang. When an older, overtly racist skinhead returns home from prison, the easy camaraderie of the group is broken, and Shaun is faced with a moral conflict. He digs the music and friendship, but he can’t stand racism. Meadows’ most political film yet, the film draws on the counter-culture of the times to stand as a metaphor for Thatcherism and the invasion of the Falklands.

"Rising Son" chronicles the rise, fall and rebirth of skateboard superstar Christian Hosoi. From his beginnings as an athletic renegade to his fall-from-grace stint in Federal prison for drug trafficking, and the miraculous recovery that has inspired millions of young adults - this film is destined to inspire all who see it!

Using never-before-seen home movies of Christian from childhood through his release from prison in 2004, the film features interviews with friends and family, including Tony Alva, Jay Adams, Jason Lee and others. Hosoi was bent on displaying his sheer athleticism, skying at times ten feet above the ramp to perform his signature “Christ Air” maneuver (in which he grabbed his board and extended his arms, Christ-like, before plummeting back to earth), often whooping in mid-air as he did so. This is the true story of a skateboarding pioneer and legend.

An edgy anti-war film, at once classic and avant-garde, integrating news media images and video with rich media format artwork, in the tradition of Jimi Hendrix's 'Machine Gun' song and anti-war video. The original rock song, 'Anger and In-Dig-Nation' was written and performed by Dr Ryman using a 'virtual instrument' inside a 'virtual environment'. 'Lead' and 'Rhythm' guitars are performed on keyboard controller. An intense, raging rock trio, 'Neoclassic' in form, the likes of Cream, or Band of Gypsies with politically and environmentally charged lyrics.

World Premiere

DIRECTOR/PRODUCER/SCREENWRITER: Emiko Omori
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Michael Chin
EDITOR: Wendy Blair Slick
MUSIC: Larry Oatfield
NARRATOR: Linda Hunt
55 Minutes, 2006, United States

Ripe for Change chronicles the intersection of food and politics in California over the last 30 years. California is at a crossroads in agriculture, fending off overdevelopment and the loss of farming traditions while simultaneously embracing innovative visions of sustainability. Always a fascinating marriage of opposing extremes, California is the state from which Cesar Chavez brought the plight of migrant farm workers and the hazards of industrial farming to the attention of the world. Yet it is also the state that embraced the biotechnology industry and spurred the fast-food movement. Alongside this movement are the leaders in redefining school lunch programs, the marketing system known as community supported agriculture (CSA) and calls for more sustainable farming that considers the impact on environment, community and workers. With diminishing resources and a growing population, how will the state cope with this dilemma? How can consumers participate in these life-affecting decisions? Revealing interviews with some of California's prominent farmers, chefs and food thinkers offer an opportunity to consider these complex questions. These stories are about survival, building communities and reclaiming the aesthetics of food, and how food nurtures our souls while sustaining our bodies With award winning Bay Area filmmaker Emiko Omori in person.

Few judges provoke the ire of conservatives more than Thelton Henderson, Senior Judge of the Federal District Court of Northern California.

SOUL OF JUSTICE: Thelton Henderson’s American Journey is a timely and unforgettable story about one person’s commitment to integrity and human rights and his profound effect on the lives of millions. From the inhumane conditions at Pelican Bay State Prison to the slaughter of dolphins by tuna-fishing fleets to the elimination of affirmative action, SOUL OF JUSTICE reverberates with the heart-wrenching and dynamic issues that have placed Henderson, one of the first African-American federal judges, on the front lines throughout the last 25 years. STRANGE CULTURE
Official Selection Sundance 2007
Official Selection Berlin Film Festival 2007
Northern California Premiere

DIRECTOR: Lynn Hershman Leeson
PRODUCERS: Steven Beer, Lise Swenson, Lynn Hershman Leeson
SCREENWRITER: Lynn Hershman Leeson
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Hiro Narita
CAST: Tilda Swinton, Peter Coyote, Thomas Jay Ryan, Josh Kornbluth and Steve Kurtz
75 Minutes, 2006, United States
www.strangeculture.net

Exactly how far is the U.S. government allowed to go in order to protect our nation? Some would say as far as humanly possible... but what happens when they react and attempt to punish a nonexistent threat?

These questions are but two of the many that "Strange Culture" stirs in the mind. The documentary concerns the story of Steve Kurtz, an artist and college professor who was preparing an exhibition on genetically modified food for the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition. Part of the exhibition concerned the usage of bacteria and other innocuous biological specimens, as audiences were allowed to test foods with the biological agents to draw conclusions one way or the other. Then, a few days prior to the exhibition, Steve's wife died of heart failure in her sleep.

While responding to the 911 call, paramedics noticed Steve's labeled bacteria specimens, and a few choice books on biological warfare, and they called the FBI, who sent over agents in HazMat suits to quarantine Steve's apartment while he was brought under investigation for possible bio-terrorism. Within hours of his wife's death, he was being detained.

Currently the government is attempting to try a fraud case with no plaintiffs involved. On top of that, the fraud case is a civil one, but steps are being taken to transfer it into a criminal case instead, where Steve could face, instead of fines, up to 20 years in jail.

Why should this case concern us? Because if the government can find no cause and still move forward, it is a gross abuse of human rights and from an artistic stand-point, what is terrorist intent? If you write a book, film a movie, perform a song that is critical of the government, could you then be liable for possible detainment and criminal punishment for simply expressing freedom of speech?

The actors chosen for the main roles of Steve and his wife are Thomas Jay Ryan and Tilda Swinton, respectively and when in the film the real Steve Kurtz is allowed to speak, we start to relate to him even more.

"Younger filmmakers should be looking to Hershman Leeson for lessons on how to reinvent old forms while at the same time telling an urgently topical story. The director not only breaks the fourth wall, she reduces it to plaster dust." Variety With celebrated American film essayist, director Lynn Hershman Leeson in person

Ecological Footprint paints a picture of our current global situation: for the first time, humanity is in "ecological overshoot" with annual demand on resources exceeding what Earth can regenerate each year. Most countries are running ecological deficits, with Footprints larger than their own biological capacity. Dr. Mathis Wackernagel explores the implications of these ecological deficits, and provides examples of how governments, communities and businesses are using the Footprint to help improve their ecological performance.

This film is a story that charts the journeys of three very different people with a common spiritual need. A grieving eye doctor (Graham) confronts her guilt over the loss of her young son. An aging painter comes to terms with impending blindness. A young photographer grapples with his inner demons. It juxtaposes the physical motion of people—journeying every day back and forth to their jobs—with their emotional paralysis. It contrasts the idea of a fixed and determined journey (a means to an end) with the search for love and the search for community (belonging). It is a film about intangible connections, reaching out and fulfilling one’s spiritual needs in a world that is mostly uninterested in private suffering. The story calls for us to face our mortality by embracing our shared humanity.

THE EDGE OF EDEN – LIVING WITH GRIZZLIES

DIRECTORS/PRODUCERS/SCREENWRITERS: Jeff and Sue Turner
EDITOR: Andrew Chastney
MUSIC: David Mitcham
FEATURING: Charlies Russell
89 minutes United States

The grizzly bear, sometimes called the silvertip bear, is a powerful brownish-yellow bear that lives in the uplands of western North America. Normally a solitary active animal, in coastal areas the grizzly congregates alongside streams and rivers during the salmon spawn. Every other year females (sows) produce one to four young.

This is the true story of Charlie Russell who saves grizzly bear cubs from zoos where they would otherwise die and raises them in the wilderness. He has been quietly proving for the past decade that these magnificent animals are not naturally violent or ferocious toward people.

Doctors Without Borders/Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is pleased to present "Invisibles", a film produced by renowned Spanish actor Javier Bardem.

Inspired by the international humanitarian work of MSF, Javier Bardem worked with the organization to produce a film which highlights five neglected humanitarian crises taken from MSF's yearly "Top Ten" list of underreported humanitarian stories. Each topic is addressed in a separate short film, shot by different directors, creating the five-part film "Invisibles."

Mariano Barroso directs "Bianca's Dream," which looks at the dual role of eflornithine, a drug used as a beauty product in wealthy nations, but which is needed to treat Sleeping Sickness in the Central African Republic.

In "Letters to Nora," director Isabel Coixet examines how the parasitic disease Chagas afflicting her family in Bolivia affects a young woman working in Madrid.

Director Javier Corcuera travels to Colombia in "Voices of the Stones," where he documents a group of people by the ongoing violence in that country as they try to return to their rural homes.

"Good Night, Ouma," directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa, examines the ongoing crises of the "night commuters" and child soldiers in northern Uganda.

Acclaimed director Wim Wenders looks into the wide-spread problem of sexual violence and how it is affecting victims in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This dynamic film gives audiences the chance to encounter situations MSF's medical teams face every day, and helps shed some light on these forgotten humanitarian crises.

Like no other film before, China Blue is a powerful and poignant journey into the harsh world of sweatshop workers. Shot clandestinely, this is a deep-access account of what both China and the international retailers don't want us to see: how the clothes we buy are actually made.

Following a pair of denim jeans from birth to sale, China Blue links the power of the U.S. consumer market to the daily lives of a Chinese factory owner and two teenaged female factory workers. Filmed both in the factory and in the workers' faraway village, this documentary provides a rare, human glimpse at China's rapid transformation into a free market society.
