120 min Italy
Angelo Longoni's new bio-pic about Michalangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, the supremely great and more-famous-than-ever late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century Italian artist, is a glorious spectacle with a charismatic star, Alessio Boni. Marked by rich interiors, often lit as in Caravaggio's paintings, panoramic shots, sweeping music, and large cast, this is a pleasure to watch. The movie gives a clear sense of the main figures in his life, his bisexuality and male lover (Francesco, Luca Capuano), his patrons, a bevy of lovely women to paint and make love to, and enemies; the ideological conflicts over his reliance on prostitutes and boys of the street as live models rather than drawings as the basis for his paintings; his struggle with malaria; his involvement with the Knights of Malta, and his tragic end.

This inspiring film is a profile of renegade architect Michael Reynolds, who for 30 years has led a crew in the New Mexico desert in designing "earthship biotecture"-housing that uses recycled products and is completely self-sufficient. His ingenuity in creating such buildings is as rousing as his failures to persuade the state government to let him continue his experiments are frustrating.
